Registration for 2018-19 School Year
Why AP Language? Registration for School Year
2
Purpose of AP Language College prep: not to get you INTO college; to ensure success when you get there Less than half of students who enroll in a 4-year college finish with a degree To smooth out the transition to college level studies so less stress, anxiety, and failure early on AP Language provides in depth development of the three of the most important skills for success in ANY academic: reading, writing, and thinking Not flashy, but massively important
3
What we do in AP Language WORKS:
Average AP test scores over the past eight years are MASSIVELY above both the state and national averages Anecdotal evidence from former students Skills gained in AP Language are universal skills that apply in almost all academic and professional settings Skills are crucial to citizenship in a democracy

Why AP/CHS Instead of Running Start?
RS is a good option for many—but all your options should be considered College is not impossibly expensive w/o RS: FAFSA Form College credits through AP testing and/or CHS can build a significant college transcript RS costs for books and transportation are significant AP is more rigorous and challenging than many RS classes, and therefore is potentially better college prep
5
Why AP/CHS Instead of Running Start?
Why are you in such a hurry? Many people consider high school to be the best times of their lives Many have trouble finding work at 20 years old even though they may have a degree Maturation requires a certain amount of time—it doesn’t come simply by taking college classes A lot of the learning in college comes from living there—the WHOLE experiences rather than just the classes RS: 20 sections of English 101 taught as online sections Hard time finding enough qualified staff to teach the sections
6
AP vs. College in the High School (CHS)
AP: take a test at end; your score determines whether you get AP credit or not Score required depends on college/university Recognized nationwide, generally Costs around $100/test Courses you get credit for depends on the college/university
7
AP vs. College in the High School (CHS)
Take the class here at MSHS Same as AP curriculum Pass the class, enroll in BC, pay fee, you get 5 quarter credits per semester English 101 (basic comp) 1st semester English 244 (American Lit) 2nd semester $40/credit vs $105 a credit at BC $200/course vs $525/course No test necessary Should transfer seamlessly to state schools Might not be as universally accepted as AP test scores

Who Can be Successful in AP Language?
Anyone who works hard, is organized, and manages time well You do not need to be a great reader or writer; average skills will be ok Workload: significantly higher than Am Lit, but Am Lit is a challenging course as well Grades: virtually everyone gets a B or higher; around 20% end up with an A or A-
