Graphic novel memoirs are very similar they consist of narratives composed of images and words. Origins are linked all the way back to cave paintings Modern interest in graphic novels are much closely linked to our love of film

In Graphic Novels pictures & texts are vitally important Today I will read to you from our graphic novel mentor text. All events are based on the author’s own life She teaches us about Chinese culture and history. Remind students to pay close attention to the pictures as well as the text, as there is information in them that is necessary in understanding the story. Begin reading from intro on pg 7 Read “A Sad, Sad Day” pg 14-27

Discussion Questions answer in notebook – bring in tomorrow Many years ago, a law was made in China that only allowed one child per family? This is not something that we can connect with here, is it? Draw connections between Little White Duck and our first mentor text So Far From the Sea. How are they similar? How do the narrators utilize the flashback technique? How did the author of Little White Duck use both text and pictures to tell her stories? How does this form help her tell her story?
