Draw the following chart on a new sheet of paper:
Carbohydrate Benedict’s Test Positive or Negative Iodine Test Classification (MONO, DI, POLY) Honey (H) Oats (O) Table Sugar (T) Apple Juice (A)
3
Key Benedict’s Solution: Indicates the presence of glucose (monosaccharides only!) Present = Reddish-brown (orange) Not present = Remains blue (cloudy) Iodine Solution: Indicates the presence of starch (polysaccharides only!) Present = dark purple to black in color Not Present = no color change

Questions: What 3 elements are present in all carbohydrates?
Describe the use of the root word “mono,” “di” and “poly” in classifying carbohydrates. How can one determine by using Benedicts and Iodine if a sugar is: Monosaccharide Disaccharide Polysaccharide A certain sugar has no color change when tested with both Benedict’s & Iodine. What type of saccharide is it? Give an example of that type of sugar. A certain sugar has a color change when tested with Benedicts but not Iodine. What type of saccharide is it? How do you know?
