Principles of Assessment is for Learning
‘The process of learning has to be in the minds of both learner and teacher when assessment is planned and when the evidence is interpreted. Learners should become as aware of the HOW? of their learning as they are of the WHAT?’ Principles of Assessment is for Learning 2002
3
Four aspects of formative assessment
Sharing criteria Quality of questioning Quality of feedback Peer and self-assessment
4
Sharing criteria allows teachers to share their aims with pupils
involves pupils in deciding appropriate criteria for assessment helps pupils understand what makes a good piece of work provides pupils with what they need to know to support, assess and challenge each other WALT and WILF
5
Quality of questioning
improves the use of questioning in gathering evidence of pupils’ learning focuses attention on the response, not the child invites thoughtful responses, eg follow ups (Why do you think that?) encourages the involvement of more pupils, eg no hands up Think time Closed v open questions
6
Quality of feedback relates directly to learning objectives
is based on shared success criteria is positive while still suggesting an improvement focuses on what needs to be done to improve Comment-only marking Two stars and a wish
7
Peer and self-assessment
helps students to understand their own learning goals. (meta-cognition) allows students to assess progress with one another in ways that can be more productive because the teacher is not directly involved e.g. discussing criticism, interrupting for clarification is couched in student friendly language gives learners responsibility while freeing teachers to observe and intervene where necessary Traffic lights
8
Sharing experiences Think about your own experience of a particular strategy, for example ‘think time’ or ‘two stars and a wish’. In small groups, discuss the benefits and the challenges you found in using it.
