Compared to our closest relatives, the great apes, humans exhibit an increased metabolic rate and total daily energy expenditure (Pontzer et al., 2016a). In the evolutionary history of the human lineage, several factors contributed to this metabolic acceleration. While the role of bipedalism as a more efficient locomotor style is disputed, cooperative care for mothers and infants stands out as the most likely initial trigger for an evolutionary feedback loop between cognitive abilities and technology.
