1 Inequalities and Graphs (3-1)

2 Vocabulary Inequality- a mathematical sentence that uses an inequality symbol (˂, ˃, ≤, ≥) to compare the values of two expressions Solution of an inequality- any number that makes the inequality true Ex) 2x + 1 ˃ Is -1 a solution? Plug it in and check 2(-1) + 1 ˃ -3 ˃ -3 -1 ˃ This is true so -1 is a solution to this inequality *Are there any other solutions?

3 Writing Inequalities Translating:
All real numbers less than 7 *Define a variable x represents all real numbers so: x ˂ 7 6 less than a number k is greater than or equal to 13 k – 6 ≥ 13

4 Graphing an inequality
Solution: x ˂ -3 *What does x represent in words? All the number that are less than -3 Graph: You try: a ≥ 0 f ≤ ˂ n

5 Writing an inequality from a graph
(use examples pg. 166 and draw in on white board)

6 Real world examples Trail Rides starting at $19.99
You must be 18 to vote You must be at least 48 inches to ride the coaster No more than 8 ft. ceilings
