5. Creating your Cartouche
Hieroglyphs should be arranged to create interesting designs instead of the straight lights that we use to arrange our letters and sentences.
Cartouches are usually positioned vertically, but they can also be positioned horizontally to make them fit more comfortable into a design.
Your Assignment is to create a cartouche that represents a personal/familial philosophy.
Use the template you’ve been provided to trace the image on your construction paper. LEAVE THE BORDERS BLANK.
Create/Write down a life mantra/motto/guiding idea on the back of your construction paper. This should be NO LESS than a 5 word sentence.
Translate the sounds of the words into hieroglyphs (on the back of your paper).
Begin creating your cartouche.
In the border AROUND your cartouche, fill in the space with a PATTERN OF 5-7 REPEATING SYMBOLS (simple images you relate to your motto and can discuss personally)
LASTLY-COLOR IT—THE CARTOUCHES WERE VERY COLORFUL.

6. Cartouche Written Component
IDENTIFY and EXPLAIN the significance of your motto/mantra/guiding idea. Why is it relatable/important to you? How did it come about? If you can’t write more than a couple sentences, then you’ve chosen a crap- mantra. Do better.
