Who are the Lubicon? The Lubicon Lake Indian Nation is a Cree First Nation in Northern Alberta, Canada. They are commonly referred to as the Lubicon Cree. The Nation has been arguing with the Government of Canada regarding disputed land claims for decades. Their primary complaint is that oil and gas development on or near their land has dangerously threatened their way of life, their culture, and the health of those in their community.

Made up of Iraq, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Libya, Angola, Algeria, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela. The Vienna-based organization has maintained its headquarters there since 1965, hosting regular meetings between the oil ministers of its member states. When OPEC stopped shipping oil to the U.S. in the 70’s, Americans turned to Canada for more oil.

Treaty 8 Was signed in 1899 so any territory not identified in the agreement was considered crown land. Treaty 8 embraced an area in northwestern Canada of some 840,000 square kilometres -- more than three and a half times the size of Great Britain. At the time, it was not only the largest land settlement undertaken by the Canadian government with First Nations, but also the first to recognize that the "aboriginal title" of Indians and Métis are co-existent. The Lubicon did not sign this treaty! For over 100 years the Lubicon have been trying to get compensation for the land that was destroyed.
