Step Up to Writing A Formula for Writing
2
Signals In life, we have signals to give us information on what to do.
3
When you write, you have to give readers signals.
In a sentence, a capital letter means a new thought has started. End punctuation means a thought has ended.
4
When you write paragraphs, you use signals.
You indent to show that a new group of thoughts have started.
5
However, in writing paragraphs you have to organize your writing
However, in writing paragraphs you have to organize your writing. The thoughts have to be in a logical order so the reader may comprehend what you want them to know.

Preplanning Preplanning , also known as brain storming, is when we organize our thoughts. Often, graphic organizers are useful to arrange our thoughts in a logical order.
14
Drafting Once we have our ideas on paper, and organized our ideas, we start our first draft. There is a specific way I want you to start organizing your paragraphs, then we will add special touches. Later, you will learn how to organize your paragraphs for the purpose of the writing. Right now, let’s focus on the basic structure of a paragraph.
15
Drafting Look at the traffic light. Red means go. Yellow means slow down. Red means stop. We will organize our paragraph to look like an upside down traffic light.
16
Green Green means go. This is your topic sentence. This is the main idea of your paragraph. This is what you want to talk about.
17
Yellow Yellow means slow down. You want to give a detail about the main idea.
18
Red Red means stop. You want to explain your detail.
19
Yellow Next, you give another yellow. This means you still need to slow down. Give your reader some more information about your main idea.
20
Red Red means stop! Explain your second detail to the reader. This is important to make sure the reader understands.
21
Green Green! Restate your main idea in a different way, and link it to your next paragraph (main idea). This will remind readers the purpose of the paragraph and connects the information to the next paragraph.

Your Teacher Your teacher will work with you on the organization on the board. I hope you have a great time writing. Sincerely, Ms. Salazar
