1 Let’s take a step back… Journal-Just answer questions about yesterday
Let’s take a step back… Journal-Just answer questions about yesterday. Be honest with yourself. How many times did you read the passage? Did you plan &write a quick-rough outline of your brainstorm first or did you just write? Did you spend your whole time looking at the original while you wrote? Did you think about your character and your tone? Were you original and intriguing?

2 Without using yesterday’s passage,
Fill in some of the bubbles…No sentences—just general ideas Answer the following questions in the 4 corners outside the bubbles…

3 Remember, you are Phileas Fogg
What time period are you living in? late 1800s –long time ago 2. What two adjectives best describe you? conservative, humble, loner, wealthy, enlightened

4 Remember, you are Phileas Fogg
3.Look at your answers to 1 & 2, what 2-3 tones would be appropriate? Old-fashioned, little formal, humble( definitely not braggadocios!), curious… 4. What verb tense should you use? PRESENT Should you change back and forth from present to past? NO If you use past tense, are you still alive or still wealthy? (I was wealthy.)

5 In class we viewed examples of
Original and intriguing expositions and mostly copied from the passage examples. THANKS TO THE STUDENTS FOR THOSE GREAT EXAMPLES WE COULD SEE! How do you read a prompt? Circle the verb and underline the noun. REWRITE A STORY!

6 Read the 1st sentences of paragraph 2… original or unoriginal?
“Am I rich? Definitely. The people that know me can’t imagine how I got wealthy.” “I am undoubtedly rich, though none know how I made my fortune…” “Am I rich? Undoubtedly…” “I am often questioned about my money. I will not tell because how I got my money is not important, but how I spend it is…”

7 Recommendations: Be very careful when you have an original right beside you or in front of you(computer next week) when you are writing. Does your writing resemble this example? I am a member of the Reform Club. I am wealthy, and no one knows where my money came from. I don’t like attention. I am noble because I give away money anonymously. I don’t like to talk much. No one knows if I have traveled, but I know a lot about the world. Sometimes I correct other people. I live alone and don’t have a wife and children, but I have a servant… Ah yes, you have more words to the sentences, but many read exactly like this one above with a repetitive & objective reporting style, not a narrative.

8 What should I do? Do NOT read passages to answer questions. Read for understanding. Read the passage 2 times, not to answer the questions but as a reading Make yourself some notes, a plan, a rough outline on the testing ticket before you write. Stop stop stop– do not keep looking at the original—trust yourself. Can you change the narrative completely? No. You must follow the directions of a prompt, but you CAN make it your own with a true point of view and some intrigue too.

9 It’s time for you to step into Phileas Fogg’s shoes—Do NOT look at the passage-just your bubble organizer Write a few paragraphs. Do not go on and on in a paragraph. No one likes a never ending paragraph. Think quality, not quantity! Turn it all in when the time comes

10 1st NEW Writing 2nd the bubbles 3rd the multiple choice 4th the passage staple and into the basket at back of the room Work on page 1 of grammar packet Bring it everyday
