What are the “Red Flags” to student success? Challenges/barriers to retention, progression and completion What are Early Alerts & Interventions (EAI)? How does it support student success? Creating a Support Services Partnership CHM 1025 Faculty Experience Recruiting for Spring Training!

3 What are the “Red Flags” in your class?

4 What is EAI?  A systematic approach to deploying the right people with the right resources at the right times  Comprehensive, intrusive, pro-active and intentional   Aligned with individual student needs (cognitive and non-cognitive) Focused on what we can influence/control   Collaborative between professors, tutors, advisors, and mentors Evidence-based

5 EAI is the framework for doing this
Overview Students start in different places, have different needs, and progress at different speeds Range of strategies available to improve course performance, progression and completion Instructional strategies Supplemental instruction Non-cognitive support Key is providing equitable opportunities so individual students can succeed in spite of differences EAI is the framework for doing this

6 Some Possible Alerts Attendance: monitoring who is late and absent, and who attends the first day Previous Attempts: identifying who is repeating the course for the 2nd or 3rd time Diagnostic: assessing prerequisite knowledge or skills Class Materials: identifying who has acquired and who brings the textbook(s), access codes, other materials to class regularly Assignments: monitoring completion of and/or assessing student learning on the first assignment(s) Quizzes/Tests: assessing students’ scores on early quizzes and tests

7 Some Possible Alerts Threshold Concept/Skill: identifying and assessing a concept or skill covered early in the term that students must master in order to succeed in the rest of the course Engagement: assessing engagement in class activities or discussions, with homework, and/or with Blackboard or another online learning platform Non-Cognitive Factors: assessing work, transportation, family, or personal issues that are interfering with students’ success Pedagogy: reviewing your pedagogy via an anonymous, mid-term student survey on your teaching strategies MAP: ensuring students are taking the required or recommended courses for their program of study GPA: determining at-risk students by overall GPA Awesomeness: promoting and rewarding good work and good habits

8 Describe your Dream Partnership with Support Services

9 CHM 1025 Faculty Experience

10 What We’ve Learned Effective EAI system is intentional
Structured roles and responsibilities for faculty and those who support Early diagnostic to determine starting levels Frequent assessments and feedback Individual study plans Early and regular communication Faculty, tutors and students Evaluation, best practice sharing and on-going improvement Requires multiple semesters for smooth implementation

11 Hands-On Activity 1 Identify a Course for EAI
Identify a course you will teach in the next semester that could be a good candidate for EAI Discuss with the person sitting next to you why you want to apply early alerts and interventions to this course
