Regent = Official that would rule in a child emperors place until child emperor was old enough to rule themselves Impressed by Chinese culture Sent Japanese scholars and artists to China to study Chinese society

Japan and Religion Traditional religion of Japan was Shinto – teaching love and respect for nature and ancestors. Prince Shotoku impressed by Buddhism, and supported spread of Buddhism in Japan At first people did not accept Buddhism Eventually most Japanese blended the religions by combining aspects of Buddhism and Shinto together
