1 Warm –up – write the quote, answer the questions
Romeo and Juliet Act 5 Scene 3 end Date: Objectives Finish Act 5 Scene 3 See the end of the play. By the end of the class, students should be have a better understanding of ‘consequences’ and ‘fate’. Warm –up – write the quote, answer the questions “Capulet, Montague, See what a scourge is laid upon your hate. That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love” The Prince will blame the feud between the two families for the death of Romeo and Juliet, as well as Paris and Mercutio who were not part of the feud. Can you imagine and describe a scenario where two classmates are fighting and another classmate, who was not even involved, gets hurt?

2 Today’s Reading Act 5 Scene 3 2.44 – 2.59
Romeo has just killed Paris and feels guilty about that. He talks about his love for Juliet again before poisoning himself. Friar Laurence arrives too late for Romeo. Juliet wakes up and he tries to take her way but she refuses, choosing to kill herself as well. Friar Laurence explains everything to the Prince, who then gives out to the two feuding families. The play concludes then. Audiobook at

3 Notes – Act 5 Scene 3 Romeo shows several signs of having matured in this scene. He thinks about other people in the form of giving Balthasar money, his father a letter and he tries not to fight Paris. It is unfortunate, or perhaps fate, that Friar Laurence arrives moments too late and that Juliet awakes moments too late. Either could have prevented Romeo’s death. Juliet tries to ends her life the same as Romeo’s however is forced to rush things when she hears people coming who could stop her. “Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger.... .... This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die.” Friar Laurence’s plan has completely failed at the point.

4 Notes – Act 5 Scene 3 Friar Laurence’s final speech explains to the characters what has happened and summarises the story of the play. Romeo’s servant and his letter back up the Friars story. The play ends on a hopeful note; the feud is over. Lord Montague and Capulet shake hands and grieve together as the Prince passes judgement. “A glooming peace this morning with it brings. The sun for sorrow will not show his head.... ....For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo” The play ends as the prologue is Act 1 said it would. Many lives may be saved now due to the tragic deaths of these few people.

5 Exercises In pairs, discuss and answer to the following:
“Some shall be pardoned, and some punished” (Prince Escalus) List the following characters in terms of who should be punished most and explain why? (1-5, Most guilty at top) Lord and Lady Capulet Friar Laurence, The Nurse, Balthasar, The Apothecary.

6 Exercise In pairs, write and perform the following scenario.
You think your friend has just done something stupid. Out of grief, sadness or confusion, you do the same foolish thing. After this, it turns out your friend didn’t do the idiotic thing you thought he did. When he sees you have done it however, he does it too. Whatever ignorant thing you pretend to do, end the scene with both of you having ‘died’.

7 Questions – Point, “reference”, explain.
Describe Romeo before he kills himself. How is he feeling do you think? How does Friar Laurence try to save Juliet and what is her response? In your opinion, who is to blame most in these events? Do you think the Montague and Capulet families will get along now? Why or why not? What is your opinion of the end of the play? Did knowing the end affect your decision?

8 Cooldown Question Same as the warm-up in a way.
Can you imagine again two people arguing in class and, due to that argument, a third innocent person getting hurt? How would you feel if you were: The people arguing. The person who got hurt.
