Warm Up (Don’t write down; think about it and prepare to share out) What do YOU think is the largest religion in the world? Why? As of 2010, Christianity was by far the world's largest religion, with an estimated 2.2 billion adherents, nearly a third (31%) of all 6.9 billion people on Earth. Islam was second, with 1.6 billion adherents, or 23% of the global population

3 What is culture? All products of human work and thought
Ties us to groups and separates us from others Examples: Food and shelter Religion Political organization Education Language Society: Group shares a region, identity, and culture

4 What are the different kinds of change?
Innovation: Meeting a need by creation Examples: baskets or clay pots Diffusion: Spread of ideas Examples: internet and internet sales Acculturation: Society adapts or adopts Examples: wearing jeans and flip flops Society changes. Some change very quickly and some change very slowly.

5 What are the major religions?
There are 5 of them!! They CAN fall into 3 categories: 1. Monotheistic Belief in one god 2. Polytheistic Belief in many gods 3. Animistic Belief in divine forces of nature

6 What is Judaism? Oldest monotheistic religion 4,000 years old
Basic laws and teaching in Hebrew Bible Followers called Jews

7 What is Christianity? Founded over 2,000 years ago Also monotheistic
Followers called Christians Teachings from Jesus in New Testament Bible

8 What is Islam? Monotheistic Followers called Muslims
Muhammed brought messages from Allah Qur’an is the holy book Founded 1,400 years ago

9 What is Hinduism and Buddhism?
Oldest religion at 5,000 years ago Polytheistic with many gods However monotheistic with supreme God, Brahman Reincarnation Founded 2,500 years ago Founded by Siddhartha Gautama Reach a state of Nirvana Does not fit into category Nontheistic religions are traditions of thought within religions—some otherwise aligned with theism, others not—in which nontheism informs religious beliefs or practices.[1]

10 TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT You will complete two Venn diagrams --1st one: Compare/Contrast the 2 religions Christianity and Judaism --2nd one: Compare/Contrast the 2 religions of Islam and Hinduism --You need to have AT LEAST four (4) bullet points in EACH section!
