1 Science Starter 2. What trends do you recognize in the Periodic Table?
Sort the following cars into as many groups as you can: 2. What trends do you recognize in the Periodic Table? Grab a calculator!

2 Objective SWBAT track their own data to see how they are progressing toward the Big Goal SWBAT identify the major groupings of the Periodic table and describe their nature.

3 AGENDA Science Starter Tracking Data/Progress Reports
Testing Folder Organization Binder Organization Navigating the PToE Coloring Time! Exit Ticket

4 Test Data 1st Block 4th Block 75% 78%

5 Test Return and Tracking
You will be given a tracker so that you can record your performance on the test. Fill out your tracker COMPLETELY. Front and back. This is so YOU know how your mastery is coming along. Your grade will be 0 if you do not return When you are finished, bring your test to me!

9 Unit 2: The Electron Welcome to the PToE!

10 Unit 2: The Electron February 8, 2016 Intro to the PToE

11 Navigating the Table Element: The “building blocks” of matter – cannot be broken down by physical or chemical means

12 Periods: Rows (go across) on PToE
GROUPS: Groups (Also called “Families”): Columns (go up and down) on PToE They are numbered 1-18 Group 1 has Hydrogen at the top Group 18 has Helium at the top They can also be grouped A and B with an accompanying Roman Numeral Periods: Rows (go across) on PToE They are numbered 1-7

13 COMPLETE THIS USING THE GALLERY WALK?

14 Quick Check: What’s the Element?
Group 2, Period 5? Group 16, Period 4? Group 3A, Period 2? Group 5B, Period 5?

17 GROUPING ELEMENTS There are several ways the elements can be sorted…
Before I tell you, let’s think about a few different substances and see how they act.

18 Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids
Good conductors of heat and electricity High luster (shine) Ductile, malleable. Non-Metal Poor conductors of heat and electricity Dull and brittle

19 Metalloids Metalloids
Located on the “staircase” of the periodic table. Generally have properties similar to metals and nonmetals Mediocre conductors of electricity Aka “semiconductors”

20

21 Solid, Liquid, Gas These is another way we can classify elements… whether they are solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature.

22

23 Color-Coding Using colored pencil or crayons, take 10 minutes to color your periodic table by metal, metalloid, or non-metal. Find some way (a symbol or shape or some way you will understand) to identify elements based on whether they are solid, liquid, or gas at room temperature.

24

25 Mg, Si, Cl, Cd, Rb, Pb, Al, Sb, Ar, O, W, Br
For the elements listed above, what is/are: Metals Nonmetals Metalloids Poor conductors of electricity Gases at room temperature HOMEWORK (have them copy)

26 EXIT TICKET

27 EXIT TICKET What group of elements have properties of both metals and non-metals? What element is in group 2, period 5?
