Chapter 6 Section 4 – pg 242 Fire and Fire Safety

2 Pg 243 Understanding Fire Combustion: a rapid reaction between oxygen and a fuel Fuel: a material that releases energy when it burns Fuel: wood Fuel: paper Fuel: gas

3 Pg 243 The Fire Triangle Three things necessary to start and maintain a fire are fuel, oxygen, and heat Oxygen in the air supplies the fire As the fire eats up the oxygen in the air, it heats it up making it rise and a new supply of cooler air replaces it Just like all reactions, fire need a certain amount of activation energy to get started. Once started, the reaction supplies the necessary energy for the reaction to continue A fire must have some kind of fuel to continue.

4 Pg 244 Controlling Fire To stop a fire you must remove one of the three necessary components Firefighters used water because it covers the fuel and cools down the reaction

5 Pg 244 Home Fire Safety Fires in homes are common due to carelessness with cigarettes, candles, stoves, hair straighteners, personal heaters……. Most common sources are small heaters, cooking, and faulty electrical wires While they are still small you can fight them by smothering them with heavy cloth, or baking soda. Do not throw water on an electrical fire Know if you have a fire extinguishers and where it is

6 Preventing Trouble Smoke Detectors Fire Extinguishers
Pg 245 Preventing Trouble Smoke Detectors Fire Extinguishers Keeping flammable things away from heat

7 Chapter 6 Section 4 Homework – pg 245

8 1A. What three things are required for combustion?

9 1B. How does the fire triangle help you control fire?

10 1C. To stop a forest fire, firefighters may remove all the trees in a strip of land that lies in the path of the fire. What part of the fire triangle is affected?

11 2A. Why is it important to know about the causes of fire and how to prevent fires?

12 2B. What are the three most common causes of home fires?

13 2C. Choose one common cause of home fires
2C. Choose one common cause of home fires. Describe measures that can be taken to prevent fires of this type.
