2. Diabetes UK is the leading UK charity for people with diabetes:
We provide information and support for people with diabetes.
We work with the NHS and healthcare professionals to improve diabetes care and outcomes.
We campaign, raise awareness and share good practice.
We have a network of volunteers and local groups.
We fundraise and fund research.
We are not funded by the NHS, local or central government and we do not provide “clinical” services.
We have a vision. It’s not an easy thing to achieve and it won’t happen overnight. But our vision is of a world where diabetes can do no harm.

3. But people don’t think it’s serious
But people don’t take diabetes seriously. Research has shown that only 30% think diabetes could have a serious impact on their life.
This is really important……. And something we want to change because…..

4. Diabetes is serious
Everyday around 700 people diagnosed with diabetes (one person every 2 minutes).
3.6 million people currently diagnosed and estimated that another 1 million have diabetes but don’t yet know it.
There are two types of diabetes – 90% of people have Type 2 and 10% have Type 1.

5. Diabetes is serious
The complications that can arise from poor management of diabetes are staggering.
It effects every part of the body.
Aprox 10% of NHS budget spent on diabetes and related complications.
And there are 11.9 million people at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes!

7. Helping people to reduce their risk of developing diabetes or to manage their diabetes well
Our website provides lots of up to date and clinically accurate information and tools.
We have lots of free resources and leaflets that can be ordered, to provide people with accurate and reliable information.
We have an online ‘learning zone’ to help people learn more about diabetes and self-management.
We can offer support through our helpline, online forum, local
groups and volunteer opportunities.
Information and support for people with diabetes:
Online information and tools, including videos, tips, ideas and explanations. Recipes etc
Leaflets and resources explaining what diabetes is, what health care people are entitled to, what to expect at foot checks, good food etc (sign post to examples at event). All available to order for free via online shop.
Advocacy packs for people with diabetes highlighting their rights around education and access to FLASH Glucose monitoring.
Learning zone and ‘my diabetes and me’ online course
Helpline, forum, local groups and volunteering opportunities. Helpline - Get specialist information and advice on all aspects of living with diabetes. Call us for answers, support or just to talk to someone who knows about diabetes.

Helpline and advocacy service for people with diabetes.
*Calls to 0345 numbers cost no more than calls to geographic (01 and 02) numbers and must be included in inclusive minutes on mobile phones and discount schemes. Calls from landlines are typically charged between 2p and 10p per minute while calls from mobiles typically cost between 10p and 40p per minute. Calls from landlines and mobiles to 0345 numbers are included in free call packages. Calls may be recorded for quality and training purposes.
