Unit 5: The Mole Stoichiometry
7
Stoichiometry Branch of chemistry that studies AMOUNTS of substances that are involved in reactions. Stoichiometry can be used to predict: How much product will be produced in a reaction given a certain amount of reactant How much reactant you need to make a certain amount of product Example: Medicine manufacturing!
8
1st Step: Identify GIVEN and FIND 2nd Step: Convert to moles (if necessary) 3rd Step: MOLE BRIDGE (use coefficients from balanced chemical equation) 4th Step: Convert the moles into the units (L, g, particles) question is asking for, if necessary STEPS!

In your notes, only write down the “Given”, “Find”, and the original equation!
1. The equation for the Haber process for the production of ammonia is represented by the equation N2 + 3H2 2NH3. The complete conversion of 9.0 moles of hydrogen to ammonia would require how many moles of nitrogen? Given: Find:

In your notes, only write down the “Given”, “Find”, and the original equation!
2. In the equation 2KClO3 2KCl + 3O2, how many moles of oxygen are produced when 3.0 moles of KClO3 decompose completely? Given: Find:
13
You try! 3. Iron metal and oxygen combine to form the magnetic oxide of iron, Fe3O4. How many moles of iron can be converted to magnetite by 8.80 moles of pure oxygen? Eq: 3Fe + 2O2 Fe3O4 Given: Find:
14
Practice 4. For the reaction C + 2H2 CH4 how many moles of hydrogen are required to produce 10 moles of methane (CH4)? Given: Find:
15
More Practice 1. Using the Hoffman apparatus for electrolysis, a chemist decomposes 36 moles of water according to the balanced chemical equation below. How many grams of hydrogen gas should she get? Equation: 2 H2O(l) 2 H2(g) + O2 (g) Given: Find:
16
More Practice 2. Ammonia, NH3, for fertilizer is made by causing hydrogen and nitrogen to react at high temperature and pressure. How many moles of ammonia can be made from 2 moles of nitrogen gas? Equation: N H2 2 NH3 Given: Find:
17
More Practice 3. Liquid sodium reacts with chlorine gas to produce sodium chloride. You want to produce 581 g of sodium chloride. How many grams of sodium are needed? Equation: 2 Na(l) + Cl2(g) 2 NaCl(s) Given: Find:
