Russia is so large it is in Europe and Asia The Ural Mountains are the dividing line between the two continents They formed between 200 and 300 million years ago Plate tectonic movements are physical processes operating on a planetary scale

The Ural mountains The Ural Mountains extend about 2,500 km from the Arctic Circle to the grasslands of the northern border of Kazakhstan

Plate tectonic theory The Earth’s crust is made up of pieces called plates Below the crust is a hot semi-molten layer called the Earth’s mantle Heat from the Earth’s core causes convection currents in the mantle These currents slowly move the plates around The Ural Mountains formed when two plates collided, over 200 million years ago
