1 The Respiratory System
Colton Mattiucci and Kassidy Boliek Period 1 AP Biology

2 Components There are three major parts to the respiratory system: the airway, the lungs, the muscles of respiration. The airway is composed of the nose, the mouth, the pharynx, larynx, the trachea, the bronchi, and the bronchioles. The airway is the start and end of the respiratory system. The lungs are the largest component of the respiratory system. The muscles of respiration include the diaphragm and intercostal muscles.

3 Function The function of the airway is to carry air between the lungs and the body’s exterior. The function of the lungs is to pass oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out. The muscles of respiration work similar to a pump, pushing air into and out of the lungs during breathing.

5 Diseases Some diseases that occur in the respiratory system:
- Asthma: wheezing and breathlessness caused by a narrowing of the airways - Bronchitis: inflammation of the lungs mucous lining. - Emphysema: disease of the alveoli - Hayfever: an allergic reaction to pollen, dust or other irritants - Influenza: caused by viruses

6 Development The respiratory system begins to develop in a fetus at 4 to 5 weeks and is fully developed at month 7. The respiratory system does not carry out gas exchange until after birth. The respiratory system continues to develop throughout our lives.
