Discussion questions for Corrugated Safety Factors and Pre-Shipment Testing (member led session) PMC meeting Oct 15, 2015
2
When designing secondary packaging, do your engineers still use the traditional safety factor to determine minimum compression strength required? I ask this because we continue to get challenged to reduce corrugated and we see many products in the industry moving to shrink and pad or just shrink. But when we determine compression strength required and run distribution testing on alternate designs, results would indicate we would incur more damage. Are safety factors outdated due to changes in the supply chain? Have you found them to be too stringent and drive “over-engineered” packaging? Any thoughts or best practices you can share would be most helpful.

Questions? Use Safety Factors when designing? Use ISTA Pre-Shipment?
Use custom pre-shipment testing? Specify ECT? Specify Mullen? Specify Board Combinations? Specifying Compression Strength? Conservative packaging for launch? TOPS or CAPE? Supplier checks and audits for compliance?
