Unit One- New France Lesson One – The Newcomers Look at the pictures on H2 – brainstorm some ideas on the board for these pictures

2 Why History? Studying the PAST gives us reasons for WHY things are the way they are today…

3 3 things to think about Look at pictures on page H2 – What do we see?
The current organization of fields and farms in the St. Lawrence River area of Quebec The prevalence of French on business signs in modern Montreal (the law does not require French only, just that French be larger than other languages) The prominence of the Roman Catholic religion and its local churches in the lives of Modern Quebecois How do farms in your province compare to the ones shown in the picture? Write down 3 observations about each picture Answer these questions – What was the author if this unit trying to show about modern Quebec by selecting these 3 pictures? How effectively do they show a key feature of modern Quebec? What do they tell us about the impact of history on modern Quebec?

4 The BIG Question for this Unit
Why is Quebec’s Character so French? Other questions… Why did people migrate from Europe to New France? How did these people live and organize their society? How did newcomers interact with the First Nations? How did the newcomers interact with the First Nations? How did the newcomers relate with the English in North America? What questions can I ask to investigate the conflicts that shaped the region?

5 What have I learned… Please make this chart in your notebook
What I learned… Agriculture Language Religion Browse ahead to Unit 1 to see what you can find about agriculture, language and religion in the history of New France. Does this cause you to add to or modify any of your observations?

6 The Newcomers In the 1530s, France began to send explorers to find new lands. The area around what is now called the St. Lawrence was among the new lands explored for France. France decided to set up colonies there and people from France would live there permanently

7 The Newcomers What is it like being a newcomer to Canada?
What would have it been like for the First Nations Peoples to see big ships sailing up their waterways? And to be introduced to people who looked different and spoke a different language? Harsh Winter Climates Did not know about crops and what would grow Survive by killing and eating the wildlife Didn’t know whether the First Nations people would welcome them
