2 Roman country life While Rome was the biggest city in the empire, 90% of the people of the Roman Empire lived outside the city in the country Even away from the city, patricians and plebeians had very different lives

3 Roman country life Patricians owned villas (country estates with large houses) Romans could invest their money and crops in their estates and use the villa to relax in the summer heat

4 Roman country life Patricians would sometimes go to their farms to check on how well kept they were While they were there, they would also read, write, hunt, have picnics, and take long walks

5 Roman country life Farms provided most of the food for the Romans both in and out of the cities They would grow grain and use animals such as cows, pigs, goats, sheep, and bees for other foods and supplies

6 Roman country life Slaves did most of the work on the farms while an overseer would manage the slaves and could treat them poorly Many country folk were not slaves, but led hard lives too by managing their own farms or working on other ones (“He who does not work shall not eat”)
