6 Background The UK is planning to resettle up to 20,000 refugees from the Syrian region over the next five years. The Government is working out the logistics of the extended scheme with local authorities and the voluntary sector.

7 The resettled refugees are given five years’ Humanitarian Protection status, with permission to work and access public funds. Official statistics show that 1,337 people had been resettled in the UK under the scheme by the end of December 2015.

8 What is an “Asylum Seeker”?
... Someone who leaves their own country for their safety, often for political reasons or because of war, and who travels to another country hoping that the government will protect them and allow them to live there. What is an “Asylum Seeker”?
