1.4 cont’d ETHERS & THIOLS
2
ETHERS An ether is an organic compound containing an oxygen atom between 2 carbon atoms in a chain.
3
Ethers can be prepared from alcohols via condensation reactions.
4
PROPERTIES OF ETHERS BP is higher than those of similar sized alkanes but lower than similar sized alcohols b/c ethers do not undergo H bonding ethers have polar bonds (C-O) and a v-shaped molecule (like water) useful as solvents because they can mix with both polar and nonpolar substances
5
NAMING ETHERS 1. Identify the two alkyl groups.
2. Write the name of the shorter group, then -oxy, then the name of the longer alkyl group as if it were and alkane.
6
EXAMPLE 1: Name the following ether.
7
EXAMPLE 2: Draw the structural formula for 1-ethoxybutane.
8
THIOLS organic compounds that contain a sulfhydryl group (-SH)
-SH group is similar to -OH group strong odour (ex. garlic, skunk) Naming Example: HSCH3 - methanethiol (simply add “thiol” to the end of the alkane name)
