AEROSPACE PROPULSION A THIRD GENERATION BY-PASS ENGINE AEROSPACE 410
(10/7/2002) AIR BREATHING ENGINE TURBO-FAN ENGINES GE 90 A THIRD GENERATION BY-PASS ENGINE Dr. Cengiz Camci
5
GE 90 introduced in current thrust level is 115,000 lbs GE B the engine sustained 122,965 lbs ground tests Peebles OHIO expected in service in Boeing 777 ER
6
Composite fan blades Swept fan blades High efficiency core compressor
7
6 years 2.3 million engine flight hours 30 reported bird ingestion events (including a bird more than 3 lbs) All fan blades remained fully servicable
8
Swept fan blades add More than 2000 lbs (8.9 k N) Additional thrust SWEPT FAN BLADES also provide better fuel burn

Tests by Lucas Aerospace
Ex Pan Am Tests by Lucas Aerospace Wings needed re-strengthening
15
ETOPS EXTENDED TWIN OPERATIONS OVER WATER
16
FAA Type Design approval
confirms that the engine/aircraft combination has the reliability to conduct ETOPS operations up to 180 minutes flying time from a primary or alternate airport. ETOPS approval provides airlines much greater route-scheduling flexibility as it allows twin-engine aircraft to service routes traditionally reserved for three- and four-engine aircraft.
17
MOST IN FLIGHT SHUT-DOWNS ARE CAUSED BY PUMPS, TUBES AND SIMILAR EXTERNAL COMPONENTS
