1 Exam Prompts for Macbeth and Pygmalion

2 Sample Prompts Who should be given the most credit for Eliza's transformation from a flower girl into a duchess? Could either Eliza or Higgins have accomplished this feat without the other? Cite evidence from the play to support your argument. Scholars have suggested that Macbeth is merely a puppet, a character who is the victim of extenuating circumstances. What outside influences in Macbeth suggest that the hero is not in control of his own fate? How do they do this? Be specific. Shakespeare made frequent use of irony. Just as Duncan was saying that the traitorous Cawdor “was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust,” Macbeth enters. Why is the effect ironical? The Porter in Act II pretends to be the keeper of hell-gate. Why is this an ironical pretense? Name one additional ironical sequence found in the play. Why was it ironical? Explain your answers.
