Audience research Katy Adams, Owen Widdowson, Dixie Last, Archie Long Created by: Owen Widdowson
2
This is one half of our questionnaire that we sent around to the public.
The questions are: - Are you male or female? - How old are you? - What is your favourite genre of film? We asked these questions because it was important to find out the target audience and also their preferred genre for a film which would change what genre of film we made to suit the audience.
3
We also had a second part to the survey
We also had a second part to the survey. This was mainly to find out how people prefer their films to be structured. We asked: - Why is this your preference? - How often do you watch films? -Which of these is the most important to you? (Plot development or character development) - How important do you think these different production values are? - How do you prefer a film to end? (Cliffhanger or Closure) - Do you prefer a male or female protagonist? -Do you prefer a male or female antagonist?
4
Question one For the first question, the majority of the answers were ‘female’. 59% of people were women in comparison to the 41% of males. From this we gathered that the answers in the next nine questions would be from a majority female prospective and therefore this will change our future decisions.
5
Question two The majority of the replies were aged 16 and over. (77% of the people who completed the survey were over 16 years old). From this we have gathered that we should target our film at the ‘15’ age rating because the large majority of the results are from people above this age limit.
6
Question three Overall, people said that there favourite genre of film was ‘Action and Adventure’ (28.28%). This was closely followed by the genre of ‘Comedy’ with (27.27%) From this data we have decided to select an action adventure superhero film which also includes elements of comedy.
7
Question four As this was a written response it is hard to draw statistics from the answers given. However, the main consensus was that people enjoyed their chosen genre of film due to the suspense and excitement they brought or due to its comedic element. This supports our decision to choose an action adventure film and also lets us understand that viewers like suspense and action which we will now try to implement into our opening sequence as much as possible.
8
Question five Overall, 91% of people said that they watch films ‘occasionally’ or ‘often’. This shows how we selected a great group to survey because they would be regular film watches and therefore could create a better opinion. This will make our data more reliable.
9
Question six Between the two options shown on the left the most popular one was ‘plot development’ with 56.57% of the group selecting this option. This has helped us to decide the main plot line for our storyboard to have a heavy plot development over character development. However 43.43% people still said character development so we won’t neglect this feature of our film either.
10
Question seven In total, people selected that camerawork was the most ‘crucial’ production value. With 22% of people selecting ‘crucial’. However, people also said that overall. Sound and editing were ‘very important’ with 36% each which are the two highest for this column. This has helped us to create intriguing camera angles in our storyboards to entice the audience in to carry on watching.
11
Question eight This is another question that will help us to alter how the story plays out and especially, how the film will end. This has helped us to create a plot synopsis for the entire film that has elements of ‘closure’ so that at the end of our whole film, the audience will be satisfied with the choices we’ve made.
12
Question nine Most people selected the option of ‘I don’t mind’ (61.62% of the group) which shows that we have some flexibility about who we choose to cast in our film. This indecision has allowed us to have free creative reign over who to cast for our opening sequence.
13
Question ten Similar to the previous question, the majority selected ‘I don’t’ mind’ as their preference to which gender the antagonist should be, with % of the votes. Once again this choice has given us more creativity to select who we want to be in our film from the ‘bad guys’ perspective.
