3 IV Pilgrims In England, they were group of religious dissenters
Many followed teachings of Robert Browne Shared Calvinist beliefs: rejected idols believed in predestination

4 Calvinist Values hard work thrift simple pleasures

5 Separatists Believed they should separate from the Church of England (not just “purify” if) Were persecuted for their beliefs Believed that the Church of England had become corrupt, only the Pilgrims believed it was beyond redemption. They therefore chose the path of Separatism

6 Fled to Holland Many tried to flee to Holland to escape persecution
It was illegal to leave without government permission. Many didn’t make the boat

7 Life in Holland children began adopting Dutch culture

had others on ship who weren’t Pilgrims (Miles Standish and John Alden- protect interests of company) headed for northern Virginia (Hudson River)

William Brewster led the group of Pilgrims chosen to make the voyage

11 Landed in Massachusetts
Strayed to the north Landed in Massachusetts version 1: version 2: (official) storm blew them off course captain told to settle far from Anglican Jamestown John Howland fell overboard during a storm, but caught hold of one of the halyards and was rescued

12 Mayflower Compact Uncertain of legal rights, men signed the Mayflower Compact

13 Settlement Sighted land, tried to sail south, encountered problems and running low on supplies Made landfall in the winter of 1620 Began to build Plymouth Plantations
