Nicholaus Copernicus (1473-1543)
Polish Astronomer and Mathematician proposed heliocentric model of the universe - Sun at the center of the universe. Earth was just one of several plants that revolved around the sun many rejected heliocentric theory - how could things fall if the earth was moving? the Church banned it the following century Ptolemy's Geocentric View Copernicus' Heliocentric View
4
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) German Astronomer and Mathematician
Used his mentor, Brahe’s ideas (built off of Copernicus’ theory) calculated the orbits of the planets revolving around the sun demonstrated that planets did not move in perfect circles but in orbit called an Ellipse
5
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) Italian Astronomer
Used technology by Dutch lens grinder - invented a telescope first to see mountains on the moon and sunspot observed the four moons of Jupiter moving around the planet put through Inquisition (trial by the Church) because his observations contradicted ancient views and Christian teachings (heresy) Threatened with death, he agreed to say that the earth stood motionless at center of universe It does move
6
Sir Isaac Newton ( ) English Mathematician, Philosopher, and astronomer discovered the law of gravity (observed an apple falling from tree –wondered about the force that pulled that apple to earth) said that nature followed universal forms, all motion in the universe can be measured and described mathematically Define Gravity- force that holds planet in orbit around the sun
8
Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) English Scientist
argued that truth is not known at the beginning of inquiry (questioning) but at the end after a long process of investigation Stressed experiment and observation wanted science to make life better for people by leading to practical technologies came up with scientific method Define Hypothesis- educated guess about answer to a problem
9
Scientific Method: Make an observation, Create a question,
create a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, evaluate, (accept or alternate) your hypothesis Play song from:
