Meiosis
2
Mitosis quiz What phase do the chromosomes line up in the middle?
Metaphase What phase does the DNA condense into chromosomes? Prophase What phase does the cell start to become two cells? Telophase What is the out come of mitosis? Two identical daughter cells What major purpose of mitosis? Growth and repair
3
Purpose of Meiosis To create sex cells
In females: happens once in a life time to create all the eggs needed for the rest of their life. In males: Happens constantly to replenish dying sperm cells. Sex cells need ½ the amount of genetic information as normal cells
4
Meiosis in a nutshell Meiosis goes through the steps of Mitosis twice with a little difference. the difference in the first set of divisions is that the DNA is crossed and mixed up to make more different babies The second difference is in the second division the DNA does not replicate.

6
Meiosis part 1 Prophase DNA condenses into Chromosomes
Chromosomes switch segments
7
Prophase 1
8
Metaphase Chromosomes line up in pairs
9
Anaphase 1 Chromosomes are pulled to the poles
10
Telophase 1 Two new cells start to form and the nucleus forms around the DNA to make 2 sister chromosomes that are NOT identical
11
Interphase 2 There are now 2 cells each with 46 chromosomes.
Nucleus is present
12
Prophase 2 Two cells Chromosomes condense Nucleus disappears
13
Metaphase 2 Chromosomes line up on the center of the cell
14
Anaphase 2 Chromosomes are pulled apart
Separating the chromosomes into 23 chromosomes
16
Telophase 2 Cells separate into 2
1 cell creates 4 daughter cells that are different genetically and have half the number of chromosomes a person needs
