2 A competition to inspire GB athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   Could your words really inspire a medal win? Explain what inspire means if necessary.

In World War II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave many great speeches to help the country to put everything into winning a victory against an evil enemy. Read the text to help less able readers. This website is very useful for speech content:

Explain the prize.

11 You can either write a short speech to motivate the teams or make a video of you giving the speech.
The speech is just 200 words max so really quite short.

12 How to write a good speech
You need to think about what will inspire the athletes. Think what will motivate them. Ask them to think about the nation behind them, perhaps? Explain each point.

13 Speech-writing tips: KISS – keep it short and simple!
Make three main points Use metaphors and similes Repetition can work Be sincere Mention what is at stake Read it aloud Read these aloud and expand them as necessary.

14 Making a speech If you are doing a video you need to deliver the speech with passion. It’s better to learn it than read it off a page. Think about the key words and phrases. Use your hands. Believe in what you say. Go for it! Read aloud.
