In research, animals are used to learn more about biological systems and the illnesses that affect humans
Many animals have biological similarities to humans that make them good models for particular diseases
Rats for cancer
Rabbits for atherosclerosis
Monkeys for polio

3. Animal research has provided knowledge to eradicate or control many diseases that once were great health problems
Animals that we keep as pets live longer, healthier lives because of research involving animals

4. Animals are used in research because:
It is not ethical to test drugs or substances with unknown side effects on humans
Animal populations are easily controlled in a laboratory setting
There is no substitute for a living system necessary to study the interaction among cells, tissues and organs

5. Shorter life span of animals enable scientists to study effects over a shorter period of time.
A more rapid rate of reproduction also allows for several generations to be studied in a shorter time period.

AWA – Animal Welfare Act 1966
USDA – United states Dept of Agriculture perform inspections and enforce AWA.
Animal Care and Use Committee- IACUC Review and approve before and when animals can be used
Health Research Extension Act –Federal Funds are used includes rodents & birds

9. Voluntary Professional Standards
Accreditation of Laboratory Animal care (AAALAC) promotes the highest standard on care. Goes above and beyond regulations.
