1 Journal Using the first few pages of Chapter 12, explain each of the following in an individual, formally written paragraph: Under what circumstances is an officer allowed to place an individual under arrest? How is an arrest considered a “Constitutional” issue, and to what extent does this fact dictate the arrest process? (Cite at least two areas in the US Constitution that relate to arresting an individual.) To what extent can police utilize information provided by citizens in the community (victims, witnesses, informants) to initiate an arrest? What factors must be considered in the case of an informant (or corroborator)? Make your personal argument for or against profiling.

2 Criminal Procedure: An Exploration
Part I: Using any available news resources, locate six articles that demonstrate the arrest and pretrial processes in “real life.” You will need to locate articles that relate to: Search and Seizure, Interrogations, Confessions, Arraignment, Bail, and Plea Bargaining. For each, provide the source of the article, a brief summary, and references to any procedures/policies that are discussed in the text. (i.e. highlight any pertinent vocabulary terms!) For any article where bail its mentioned, the amount must be stated, and you must explain why you believe it is set where it is. Part II: Investigate modern police interrogation techniques by exploring the following three resources. Take notes as you work through each website: (Includes ~30 minute interview with individual trained in police interrogation.) Once you have completed the background research, you need to draft a 3/4 to one page discussion of police interrogation techniques. You may briefly review the methods used, but your focus should be on a critical analysis of methods used by police interrogators, looking at reliability and effectiveness.
