2. Learning Objective To identify features of a newspaper article
To rewrite the Tell-Tale Heart or The Black Cat from the third-person point of view in the form of a newspaper article. 2

3. Point of View Refers to narrator who is telling the story.
First Person
Third Person Limited
Third Person Omniscient

4. First Person
When a story is told in first-person point of view, the narrator is a participant in the story.
Uses first-person pronouns – I, me, my

5. Third Person Limited The narrator is outside of the story.
Uses third-person pronouns – he, she, his her, them, their.
Knowledge is limited to what is experienced, thought, or felt by one character in the story.

6. Unreliable Narrator
Sometimes the author chooses to tell the story through a narrator that does not see the story as it truly is—this is an unreliable narrator
Sometimes, the first person narrator is even mentally insane, a liar, an exaggerator, depressed, mentally challenged, very young
Is an unreliable narrator someone you can trust? 6

7. Third-Person Omniscient
The narrator is outside of the story.
Uses third-person pronouns – he, she, his her, them, their.
The narrator knows everything that needs to be known about the characters and events in the story. Can read character’s thoughts, feelings, and motives.

8. Newspaper Articles- the opening paragraph
What?
What has happened, what is the situation, etc.
Who?
Who is or was involved.
When?
When the event took place, or is likely to take place.
Where?
Where the event took place.

HOW?
How the event happened. This may include some description of actions.
WHY?
Why the event took place?

Mrs Jones, a local shopkeeper said, ‘I couldn’t believe it when Robbie Williams turned up at my shop.’
These words came DIRECTLY from Mrs. Jones’ mouth

13. Assignment
Rewrite The Tell-Tale Heart or The Black Cat from a third person perspective, as if it were a news article.
First, summarize Who? What? When? Where? of the story
Then, make sure you take out any internal thoughts or feelings of the narrator that a newspaper reporter would not know about.
For example, would a newspaper reporter know that the narrator wanted to kill the old man because of his eye? If so, how would he know that?
Then, add information that a newspaper reporter might find out that the narrator did not tell us.
For example, would a newspaper reporter get any information by asking the narrator’s neighbors about him?
