1.1 What is Science
2
What Science is and is not
The goal of science is to investigate and understand nature, to explain events in nature, and to use those explanations to make useful predictions
3
Features of Science Only deals with natural world
Scientists collect and organize info is a careful, orderly way, looking for patterns and connections between events Scientists propose explanations that can be tested by examining evidence
4
Evidence Based on Observations
Observation involves using one or more senses There are 2 types Quantitative – involves numbers (counting or measuring objects Qualitative – involve characteristics that cannot be easily measured (color or texture) Information gathered through observations is called data
5
Interpreting the Evidence
Observations alone have little meaning in science Inference is a logical interpretation based on prior knowledge

Observation and Inference
Section 1-1 Statement Observation Inference Object A is round and orange. X Object A is a basketball. Object A is a basketball. Object B is a table-tennis ball. Object C is a soccer ball. Object C is round and black and white. Object C is larger than Object B. Object B is smooth. Object B is a table-tennis ball. Each object is used in a different sport. Go to Section:
