2 A Resource-Rich Nation
The United States is the world’s third largest country in area and the third largest in population. The USA is the world’s wealthiest nation in terms of GNP. The Gross National Product is the total value of a nation’s output of goods and services.

3 An Abundance of Natural Resources
Farming – People have always grown crops or raised livestock in the US. The Great Plains were once thought to be a wasteland, but now help feed the world. Clearing the Forests – These renewable resources allow us to produce lumber, medicines, plastics, paper, etc. Wealth Underground – The US produces 20% of the world’s coal. Oil and natural gas are also found in the US. Copper, gold, lead, uranium and other non-mineral fuels are found in great quantities in the US.

4 Moving Resources, Goods, and People
Travel over water – Using the Mississippi River and Great Lakes, we have been able to transport goods to ports for shipment to other countries. By building canals, artificial waterways, we have been able to make more places able to use the water for transporting goods. Travel over land – The railroads were the first to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Diesel engines allowed greater movement of people because they could truck their goods on highways.

In 1837, Samuel Morse invented the telegraph which was a way of transmitting electrical signals through cables. This allowed cities to be connected and messages to be sent and received in minutes instead of days. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in

Fiber optics convert electrical signals into light waves. This allows people to have instant conversations all over the world. Telecommunication – communications by electric means.

9 Respecting Individual Freedoms
Free enterprise = capitalism. It allows people to own, operate and profit from their own businesses in an open, competitive market. It works because any hardworking person could become successful and wealthy regardless of their circumstances.

Rugged individualism – The willingness of individuals to stand alone and struggle long and hard to survive and prosper relying on their own resources, opinions and beliefs.
