Lesson 9.1 How do you add and subtract polynomials?
To add, add like terms. To subtract, add its opposite. Remember like terms must also have the same exponent.
2
Lesson 9.2 How do you multiply polynomials?
You multiply each term of the first polynomial by each term of the second polynomial. Make a table Multiply vertically Multiply horizontally (distributive property)
3
Lesson 9.3 How do you use special product patterns to multiply binomials? To find the square of a binomial pattern, 𝑎+𝑏 2 or 𝑎−𝑏 2 , square a, add (or subtract) twice the product of ab, and add the square of b. The find the sum and difference pattern, 𝑎+𝑏 𝑎−𝑏 , square a and subtract the square of b.
4
Lesson 9.4 How do you solve polynomial equations in factored form?
Set the equation equal to 0. Set each factor equal to 0. Solve each factor.
5
Lesson 9.5 How do you factor trinomials of the form 𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥+𝑐 (coefficient of 1)? Find factors of the form 𝑥+𝑝 𝑥+𝑞 where 𝑝+𝑞=𝑏 and 𝑝𝑞=𝑐 You are looking for factors of c that add/subtract to get b.
6
Lesson 9.6 How do you factor trinomials of the form 𝑎 𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥+𝑐 (coefficient not 1)? You are looking for factors of a and c that add/subtract to get b.
7
Lesson 9.7 How do you factor special products?
Recognize the pattern you have. Use the formula. Difference of Two Squares Pattern 𝑎 2 − 𝑏 2 = 𝑎+𝑏 𝑎−𝑏 Perfect Square Trinomial Pattern 𝑎 2 +2𝑎𝑏+ 𝑏 2 = 𝑎+𝑏 2 𝑎 2 −2𝑎𝑏+ 𝑏 2 = 𝑎−𝑏 2
8
Lesson 9.8 How do you factor polynomials completely? Group the terms.
Factor each group. Find the common factor of the two new terms.
