2 Introduction Welcome to our Roadshow and thank you for coming!

3 Research on HBV and Forced Marriage

4 Our Research Reveals… HBV cannot always be categorised as DV/IPV? State agencies are still letting victims down? Criminalisation of forced marriages has not worked? Separate sentencing guidelines? Non-criminal justice responses need to be pursued? Lack of support for male victims?

5 Aims of the Roadshow Raise public awareness on HBV and Forced Marriages Bring together key stakeholders, community groups and members of the public within one arena For people, whatever their background, to add their own voices Access new and emerging research Produce final outcomes and policy recommendations

6 Current Research at MMU
Men as victims of HBV and forced marriage Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) (2017) – 80% women; 20% men Underreported/unreliable nature of statistics Lack of research on male experiences Joint project: MMU, Jeena and The Elm Foundation

7 Problems with Male Reporting
Social construction of ‘victims’ Masculinities Men not coming forward / not being believed Lack of male refuges / organisations supporting men Resistance by women’s-only organisations?

8 Possible Solutions? Improve awareness? HBV strategy? Improve access to male spaces / support networks? Recruitment of diverse support workers? Increased funding to support male victims? Debate, discussion and evaluations (today)
