1 Cell Structure & Function

2 Cell Theory All living things are made up of cells.
Cells are the smallest working units of all living things. All cells come from preexisting cells through cell division.

3 Definition of Cell A cell is the smallest unit that is capable of performing life functions.

4 Examples of Cells Amoeba Proteus Plant Stem Bacteria Red Blood Cell
Nerve Cell

5 Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
Two Types of Cells Prokaryotic Eukaryotic

6 Prokaryotic Do not have structures surrounded by membranes (no nucleus [PRO NO], mitochondria, chloroplast, ER, Golgi Few internal structures One-celled organisms, Bacteria Do have: DNA, ribosomes, plasma membrane

7 Eukaryotic Contain organelles surrounded by membranes
Most living organisms [LIKE EU AND ME] Plant Animal

8 Most Important Part of a Cell
A) Chloroplast A) Golgi apparatus C C A B) Vacuole Winner!! B) Cell membrane Endoplasmic reticulum A) Cell walls *Matt and Melissa = cell wall vs flagella Battle—basketball tourney style/single elimination -Group assigned one part of a cell  convince class that you have the most important part of the cell by 1) telling us how your part is important or 2) bash your opponent—to win, you have to compete against all the other parts you could face -vote with clickers Now that you’ve learned about all the different parts of a cell, let’s use our imagination to create our very own favorite cell… B D D B) Mitochondria B) Flagella

9 “Typical” Animal Cell

10 “Typical” Plant Cell

11 Cell Parts Organelles

12 Surrounding the Cell

13 Plasma Membrane Outer membrane of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell Phospholipid bilayer

14 Cell Wall Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria
Supports & protects cells In plant cells, it is made of cellulose

15 Inside the Cell

16 Nucleus Directs cell activities
Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane Contains genetic material - DNA

17 Nuclear Membrane Surrounds nucleus Made of two layers
Openings allow material to enter and leave nucleus

18 Chromosomes In nucleus Made of DNA
Contain instructions for traits & characteristics

19 Nucleolus Inside nucleus Contains RNA to make ribosomes

20 Cytoplasm Gel-like mixture Surrounded by cell membrane

21 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Moves materials around in cell Smooth type: lacks ribosomes…synthesizes lipids Rough type (pictured): ribosomes embedded in surface …synthesizes proteins

22

23

24 Ribosomes Each cell contains thousands Make proteins
Found on membranes & floating throughout the cell

25 Mitochondria Produces energy through chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates

26 Golgi Bodies Packages and sorts proteins for export from the cell
Move materials within the cell Move materials out of the cell

27

28 Lysosome Digestive 'plant' for proteins, fats, and carbohydrates
Transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal Cell breaks down if lysosome explodes

29

30 Vacuoles Membrane-bound sacs for storage, digestion, and waste removal
Contains water solution Help plants maintain shape

31 Chloroplast Usually found in plant cells Contains green chlorophyll
Where photosynthesis takes place
