Skills you will need Organisational skills Time management skills
Set yourself realistic goals Researching skills – how to find out about a topic Referencing skills – how to give credit to the author and present references using the Harvard system of referencing Assignment writing skills You will need to be able to organisation your self so that you make time for your study, you need to set aside so much time each week where you can concentrate on your current topic. You will need to manage your time appropriately, think about your family and work commitments.
8
What are the difficulties you may face? How will you overcome them?
9
Assignment writing (Assessment) Source material
The purpose of the assessments are to demonstrate your knowledge and your understanding of the topic Make sure you follow the assignment brief and answer all the questions, following the format asked for You are working at level 5 and it is expected that you will be doing a lot of extra reading around the topics covered. You must give credit to those authors whose work you read and who help you to understand the subjects. When you read something and then use the idea in your work even if you have used your own words to explain it you must still give credit to the original author. This is called REFERENCING To demonstrate your knowledge and your understanding of the topics we cover in the modules you will be expected to produce a summative piece of work which will be assessed by myself or Sara, this will also be internally verified to ensure we have common standards, it will finally be passed off by a CIPD external verifier. What you need to remember for each piece of work is to follow the instructions, is it a report? Is it a group presentation or an essay? If it is a report, you need to present it as a report. You will need to demonstrate what you have learned in the class and also provide evidence of your wider reading around the topic. To ensure you demonstrate your understanding you will have to add context, this means using your own experiences, or your own workplace to demonstrate the practical application of the theory. Beyond a mere description of the theories, models and practices Analyse opposite/conflicting views and different perspectives Compare and contrast the ideas, theories and perspectives Discuss and analyse in the context of your issue/organisation Critically evaluate the literature Analyse relevance to organisation Evaluate theories/models/frameworks most appropriate for the context Use ‘short’ quotations to add interest and meaning for the reader Structure in themes - link back to research objectives/questions Acknowledge all references - Harvard protocol

Researching and referencing
Referencing – you must remember to always cite the sources you use and to include a bibliography. (Taylor 2012) Take the following quote – “the state has stepped in by requiring employers to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of employees” (Torrington, Hall & Taylor 2012:78) This was taken from Torrington, Hall & Taylor (2012) “Human Resource Management” seventh edition. Prentice Hall The above needs to be appropriately referenced if you are using it in a sentence and don’t forget page number for direct quotes When you are reading about your topic you will be gathering information which you can use in your assignment, sometimes you will read something and put your own understanding to it, you will change the words the authors use but will still be taking their ideas on board, you must give them credit for this, so you will include their names and the year the book was published after that section in your work. You will also put a full reference at the end of the work so whoever is reading your work can follow up if they want to and read more from the author you have cited. Citing all your sources, when you are writing your assignments you need to ensure you demonstrate you knowledge and understanding of the topics, to do this you can show that you have read around the topic by referencing what you have read. Referencing hand outs, go through the Harvard one, explain about it being a Teesside one.

How to reference Direct quote “ “ quotation marks author, date and page no. (Armstrong 2012: p 23) Armstrong, P (2012) Human Resource Management Prentice Hall, London Indirect quote – use your own words author and date (Armstrong 2012)

Activity Working in pairs pick an area of text and reference it: As a direct quote Not a direct quote Provide the information you would include in your bibliography/reference list Strategic HRM, performance management, organisational development, employee engagement, knowledge management
14
Other study skills Access to appropriate sources – recommended reading , Text books, Acacia Learning portal, CIPD website Researching – be aware of what you want to research and potential sources of information – remember also, quality not quantity Make notes - when using reference sources make notes of key quotes and references so you can return to these later. Also page numbers where they can be found Time management – remember that deadline exist for assignments – plan and allocate time Consider your working environment – ideally free from distractions
15
Delivering Presentations
What advice would you give to someone new to presenting to an audience? Think about: Visual, auditory, presentation skills, preparation, keeping your audience engaged Two groups prepare a flip paper presentation good practice Two groups prepare a flip paper presentation of bad practice When presenting as a group please don’t read out pages and pages of notes! Put bullet points on your slide and talk around them, your referenced notes will need to be given in separately to stop you reading them out verbatum.
16
Active reading Knowing why you are reading
Focusing on different aspects when you are reading – overall impression, key themes, purpose Re-reading as necessary Summarising key points in a format that works for you - referencing your reading
