HIGH SCHOOL WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
* Bigger School * Opportunity for more friendships * Sports/Clubs * Locker * Cafeteria * More subjects More teachers School Day = 8:22 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. * Semester System - 4 subjects from Sept. to Jan. - 4 subjects from Feb. to June * Exams - do not book holidays during those days! * 4 period day including a 40 minute lunch * Classes are 75 minutes in length Uniform

Pass the Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) Based on reading and writing expectations in all subjects up to and including Grade 9 Written in March/April of Grade 10 year. The OSSLT date is fixed for every student in the province. Do not book holidays on this date!!

REGISTRATION DEADLINES
Step 1 – Online Registration Parent/Guardian creates account, completes and submits Online Application Form. Parent/Guardian receives acknowledging receipt of the application form and advising that they will be contacted by a set date, if they are identified through the random selection process. Step 2 – Application Verification School reviews applications to verify that the applicant meets eligibility requirements (e.g. resides in school boundary area).

Step 3 – Random Selection Process January 10th, 2019 An online randomization utility will generate a list of applicants with assigned numbers. The randomly assigned number determines who is selected based upon the number of spaces available at the school. Students who are not identified are referred to the designated overflow school, St. Joseph S.S.

Step 4 – Parent Notification January 14th, 2019 Selected applicants receive an notification (on or before) January 14th, 2019 and an invitation to visit the school with the required registration documentation (2 pieces of proof of address living within boundary) Step 5 – Parent Visit January 24th, 2019 Parent/Guardian brings the required registration documentation to the school. They will receive a registration package to be completed and returned to the school on January 24th, 2019 from 1-4pm.

Step 5 – Parent Visit January 24th, 2019 The School reserves the right to not accept students who do not have complete registration documentation and who do not meet the admission requirements. Step 6 – Student Enrolled If documentation is complete and meets the requirement, the student is enrolled.

Religion Compulsory Religion credit in each of grades 9 to 12
Compulsory Retreat program –which is included in the faith formation activity fee Begin and end the school year with opening Masses as well as liturgies in Advent and Lent Students are actively involved in planning and participating as readers, choir members and Eucharistic Ministers. Each day begins with a prayer Rosary every Friday morning in Chapel

SCHOOL UNIFORM Must be McCarthy apparel only
Full uniform is expected at all times during the school day including the lunch period. SHOES - Solid black running or traditional dress (closed toe and heel) only NO moccasins/flip flops, etc… Headwear such as bandanas or hats of any type are not permitted No-shirt to be visible below outer golf top or rugby sweater Spirit wear celebrated every Friday

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Signing In Period 1 – up to 9:15 All other times Sign out Procedures Prior to the start of the school day is best practice If a student leaves without signing out, the absence will be considered as a truancy, until communication with parent is made To verify absence, parents must provide a note or voice message to attendance office NOTE – Parents must identify that they were aware of a major assignment due during their child’s absence

GET READY PROGRAM Get Ready is a transitions program that focuses on Literacy, Numeracy and Effective Learning strategies This program allows our incoming Grade 9’s to establish connections with their new peer group and members of the faculty It is a free 20 hour program that runs towards the end of August Registration is due at the beginning of June and registration forms will be available on our website No late registrations will be accepted
