Educator 2.0: Effective Teaching Strategies and Techniques Graphic Organizers Damaso Albino, MU Lysandra Alexander, PDE Jane Hershberger, CCIU Slide 1- Lysandra: Hello! Welcome to the Migrant Education Program online training module Educator 2.0: Effective Teaching Strategies – Graphic Organizers. In the Educating the Educator module, we talked about effective lesson planning. The Educator 2.0 module is intended as a presentation of graphic organizers that you can use as part of your lesson plan.
2
Purpose of this Module To present effective use of graphic organizers
Slide 2 – Lysandra The purpose of this module is to present the effective use of graphic organizers as a teaching strategy for organizing, compiling and condensing large amounts of information in visual form. Please refer to the graphic organizer templates provided in the additional resources section.
3
Why Use Graphic Organizers?
Condensing information in a visual form Providing visual representation using words or pictures Classifying information into categories Assessing prior knowledge Brainstorming ideas Extracting information quickly Enhancing reading comprehension Slide 3 – Damaso Graphic organizers have many uses. They can be used for: Condensing information in a visual form Providing visual representation using words or pictures Classifying information into categories Assessing prior knowledge Brainstorming ideas Extracting information quickly Enhancing reading comprehension

Graphic Organizers Graphic organizers are visual tools to help students Examples of graphic organizers in this module include: Defining words Describing qualities Comparing and contrasting Categorizing Identifying part-whole Sequencing Determining cause-effect Perceiving analogies Slide 4 - Jane Graphic organizers are visual tools to help students Uses can include: Defining words Describing qualities Comparing and contrasting Categorizing Identifying part-whole Sequencing Determining cause-effect Perceiving analogies

Graphic Organizers – Circle Map
Defining words or concepts in context Slide 5 – Jane This graphic organizers comprises two circles: a small, central circle within a larger one. You can ask your students to write a key idea or topic in the central circle and to list everything they know about that idea or topic in the bigger circle. For example, the central circle may simply state the word ‘my cat’; outside this circle, students may list a series of characteristics or facts about the cat. In the second graphic organizer the central circle contains the key idea ‘lives in water’ and the outside circle contains pictures of things that live in water. As we see with these examples, students may complete graphic organizers with words and pictures.
6
Graphic Organizers – Bubble Map
Describing qualities Slide 6 – Jane This graphic organizer shows a central circle containing one key idea with various branches coming from it that lead to words that describe the key idea. For instance, the central circle may contain the words ‘ice cream’. The words which branch out from this circle may contain the words ‘delicious’, ‘cold’, ‘smooth’, ‘sweet’, etc
7
Graphic Organizers- Double Bubble Map
Comparing and contrasting Slide 7 – Jane This graphic organizes looks exactly like its name would suggest: it comprises two main circles which are joined in the center by more circles indicating similarities between them. On the outer sides of each main circle, there are other circles that show aspects they do not have in common. You can use this type of organizer to help students compare and contrast two items. For example 2 animals (as in this example), two famous athletes or 2 places they have lived, etc.
8
Graphic Organizers – Tree Map
Classifying and categorizing Slide 8 – Jane This graphic organizer is similar in appearance to a family tree; it contains one main subject divided into main ideas and then into details. It is a way to organize information – for instance, you can use a tree map to teach your students about animals. You can divide this subject into the following main headings: reptiles, insects, fish, birds and mammals. These categories can be further divided into sub sets: mammals can be divided into land, air and sea.
9
Graphic Organizers – Bracket Map
Relating the part to the whole Slide 9 – Damaso This type of graphic organizer shows the different parts that make up the whole. For example, the whole is ‘the word’ which brakes down into two parts ‘continents’ and ‘oceans.’ These can be broken down by giving their names and then they can be further detailed by naming the countries of each continents.
10
Graphic Organizers – Flow Chart
Sequencing Slide 10 – Damaso Another type of graphic organizers is a flow chart. Flow charts are used to describe a sequence of events. For example, this flow chart presents the sequence of events to make a peanut butter sandwich.
11
Graphic Organizers – Multi-Flow Map
Showing cause and effect Slide 11 – Damaso In a multi-flow graphic organizer, a central action or event is linked to its cause(s) and effect(s). For example, ‘give Almond Joys to a friend’ is connected to the causes (on the left) ‘candy makes people happy’ and ‘friend needs a pick-me-up.’ The boxes on the right show effects, such as ‘friend shares candy with you or ‘friend feels better’, etc.
12
Graphic Organizers – Bridge Map
Seeing analogies and metaphors Slide 12 – Damaso This graphic organizer can be used to help students understand analogies. It can be used in a variety of subjects, including mathematics. In this example, the analogy compares the distance and time traveled six different ways.

Graphic Organizers This module presented effective use of graphic organizers The Internet has multiple examples of graphic organizers Find out which graphic organizer best fits your lesson Slide 13 – Lysandra This module presented the effective use of graphic organizers. As you have seen, there are many types of graphic organizers that can be used to fit your student’s needs. There are more examples in the Internet. We have provided, as part of the resources, some templates. Feel free to use them.
