Creativity allows an individual to look at ideas from new perspectives. In terms of a new business this might allow for inventions (creating brand new products) and innovations (adapting existing products).
Creative thinking is the process used to come up with these ideas.
Creative thinking can be accidental, when you stumble across a good idea.
Deliberate creative thinking is the process that a business will use to develop ideas within its workforce. This speeds up idea generation and the development of the idea.
New ideas and their development can give a business a competitive advantage if it can continually come up with new products and processes.

6. Thinking creatively – de bono’s six hats
Edward de Bono’s ‘Six Thinking Hats’ is an example of creative thinking. It is used to generate ideas and can aid to decision making.
Each coloured hat signifies the thinking pattern of a member of the group:
White – state the facts, what information is available
Black – negative aspects, why the idea won’t succeed
Red – state the emotion, ‘gut instinct’
Green – creative ideas, new concepts might we come up with
Yellow – positive aspects, why will it succeed?

Lateral thinking is another term for thinking creatively or ‘outside the box’.
It requires individuals and groups to leave behind traditional ideas and come up with brand new concepts – discard obvious thoughts and think differently.
