Lesson 4, January 28 The Personality of the Holy Spirit Ang Personalidad ng Banal na Espiritu

7 The Personality of the Holy Spirit
Key Text John 14:26 NASB “ ‘But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.’ ” Susing Talata.

8 The Personality of the Holy Spirit
Initial Words Because the Holy Spirit is occasionally depicted in the Bible in impersonal terms, such as wind or fire, some have concluded that He is impersonal, a type of divine power. We will learn more about the personality of the Holy Spirit as He is described in Scripture to help us better understand His role in our lives. Panimulang Salita.

9 1. His Personal Aspects (John 14:16, 17)
The Personality of the Holy Spirit Quick Look 1. His Personal Aspects (John 14:16, 17) 2. The Spirit of Truth (John 15:26, 16:13) 3. His Personality Matters (Romans 8:13, 14) 1. Mga Personal Niyang Aspeto (Juan 14:16, 17) 2. Ang Espiritu ng Katotohanan (Juan 15:26, 16:13) 3. Ang Personalidad Niya’y Mahalaga (Roma 8:13, 14)

10 but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.’ ”
The Personality of the Holy Spirit 1. His Personal Aspects John 14:16, 17 NKJV “ ‘And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive. Because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.’ ” 1.

11 These sound more like the actions
1. His Personal Aspects Jesus’ Description According to Jesus, the Holy Spirit guides, speaks, hears, discloses, and glorifies (John 16:13, 14). He also teaches and reminds us (John 14:26). He dwells in us (John 14:17), He testifies (John 15:24, 26), and He convicts (John 16:8). These sound more like the actions of a sovereign personality than they do an impersonal force.

12 Jesus specifically says that He will
1. His Personal Aspects Jesus’ Description Jesus specifically says that He will send “another helper” or “comforter.” The Greek word for “another” is allos. Allos indicates one who is numerically distinct but who is similar to Himself. In other words, Jesus promises One like Himself, One who will take His place, One who will continue to do His work in us, and who is His representative.

13 1. His Personal Aspects Jesus’ Description The Bible here uses the Greek word parakletos (John 14:16) to describe someone who is called upon for support, for assistance—someone called to our aid. Personal attributes are often ascribed to the Holy Spirit (see John 14:26, 15:26, Acts 15:28, Rom. 8:26, 1 Cor. 12:11, 1 Tim. 4:1).

14 And only a personal being has the capacity to love.
1. His Personal Aspects Impersonal Force or Divine Person? The distinctive characteristics of personality are knowledge (or understanding), feeling, and will. Only a personal being can be grieved, be deceived and lied to. Only a personal being has the ability to choose as he wills and has his own volition. And only a personal being has the capacity to love. impersonal na Puwersa o Makalangit na Persona?

15 How can believers be baptized “ ‘in
1. His Personal Aspects Impersonal Force or Divine Person? The statement that “ ‘it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us’ ” (Acts 15:28) would be absurd if the Holy Spirit were only a power. How can believers be baptized “ ‘in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit’ ” (Matt. 28:19) if the first two who are mentioned are Persons but the third mentioned is not?

16 The Personality of the Holy Spirit
2. The Spirit of Truth John 15:26, 16:13 NKJV “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth... He will testify of Me. However, when He the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth;...and He will tell you things to come.” 2.

17 A true knowledge of God is given to us in Jesus, because God has
2. The Spirit of Truth Guides to the Truth in Jesus In the Gospel of John, the word truth is a key term. Truth carries a rather personal and specific meaning: Jesus is the truth. While God’s Written Word is truthful, God’s truth is revealed in a supreme way in the Person of Jesus Christ. A true knowledge of God is given to us in Jesus, because God has revealed Himself through Him.

18 He lifts up Jesus and leads
2. The Spirit of Truth Guides to the Truth in Jesus In John 16:13, we are told that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth. He does this by pointing to Jesus Christ and by helping us to remember what Jesus has said (John 15:26) and done for us. He lifts up Jesus and leads us into a living and faithful relationship with Him.

19 and Redeemer, who is called “the God of all truth” (Deut. 32:4).
2. The Spirit of Truth Guides to the Truth in Jesus Truth in the Bible is no theory. Truth encompasses a deeply personal and faithful relationship to our Creator and Redeemer, who is called “the God of all truth” (Deut. 32:4). Thus, the Holy Spirit is aptly called the “Spirit of truth” (John 14:17) indicating not only His personal character but also His divinity.

20 The Personality of the Holy Spirit
3. His Personality Matters Romans 8:13, 14 NKJV “For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by he Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.” 3.

21 3. His Personality Matters
Of Utmost Importance “If He is a divine person, and we think of Him as an impersonal influence, we are robbing a divine person of the deference, honor, and love that is His due.”—LeRoy Edwin Froom, The Coming of the Comforter 40. If we think of the Holy Spirit only as a mysterious divine power, our thoughts will be: How can I have more of the Holy Spirit?

22 But if we think of the Holy Spirit as a
3. His Personality Matters Of Utmost Importance But if we think of the Holy Spirit as a divine Person, we will ask: How can the Holy Spirit have more of me? The decisive point is: Do you want to possess the Holy Spirit, or do you want the Holy Spirit to possess you? Do you resist His influence, or are you willing to follow Him in joyful obedience?

23 3. His Personality Matters
Of Utmost Importance Do you want to use the Holy Spirit according to your plans, or do you rely on Him so that He can enable you to become more like Jesus Christ and do what He has in mind for you? Do you take seriously the fact that “your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor. 6:19, NASB), and are you willing to glorify God with how you live?

24 What can you better relate to,
The Personality of the Holy Spirit Final Words “We need to realize that the Holy Spirit, who is as much a person as God is a person, is walking through these grounds.”—Evangelism 616. What can you better relate to, an impersonal force or a personality? Huling Pananalita.
