Difference Between Sponsors & Mentors
Mentors vs Sponsors Have mentees (M) Are people in a position with experience (desired by an M) who can offer advice/support Support M through formal/informal discussions about how to build skills, qualities & confidence for career advancement Help M craft a career vision Give M suggestions on how to expand their network Provide feedback to aid an M’s personal/professional development Offer insight on how an M can increase visibility through finding key projects and people Passively share the “unwritten” rules for advancement in their organization with mentees Have protégés (P) Are senior level staff members invested in a P’s career Promote P directly, using their influence and networks to connect them Help drive their P’s career vision Give P their active network connections and makes new connections for them Are personally vested in upward movement of their P Champion their P’s visibility, often using their own platforms and reputation for exposure Actively model behavior and involves P in experiences that enable advancement Mentoring/Sponsorship
