Journal Ethnocentrism: the view that culture, traditions, moral values, and norms of one particular ethnic group are inherently superior to all others. A common idiom for ethnocentrism is “tunnel vision,” generally referencing the philosophical idea of “cultural relativism,” or the natural process of comparing all other traditions or standards to one’s own background. 1. How do the ideas of ethnocentrism and cultural relativism fit into our [upcoming] studies of the legal system and family in America? Do you believe that these ideas are recognized by the lawmakers in the US today? Is this good? Bad? Not an issue? 2. Is ethnocentrism avoidable? Explain your response. 3. How do you define “family”? 4. Do you believe that your definition of family would directly align with the definitions provided by other members of our class? Our state? Our nation? Our continent? Why or why not, and based on what factors might you differ from these individuals? 5. THE BIG QUESTION: How do the questions above relate to or impact the creation and interpretation of laws in the United States? Explain your response!
