2 Student Engagement Student engagement is important in and out of the classroom Engaged students are more likely to remain in college and complete their education Engaged students are Attracted to their work Academically and socially connected Persist despite challenges Earn higher grades

3 Faculty Engagement Students are more likely to be engaged when faculty are engaged Faculty must create learning opportunities that allow students to connect socially and academically Faculty engagement can be measured by participation in student-centered events

4 Faculty Engagement Obstacles to faculty engagement (participation)
It may be difficult to see the importance of certain activities and events There may be fear that the initiative is the ‘flavor of the month’ There may be fear that the time commitment is too great Some faculty lack interest in events and activities

5 Goals of the Academic Pathways
Success Retention Completion

6 Components of the Pathways Initiative
Orientation Structured Advising Career Advising Course-tracks Activities

7 Components of the Pathways Initiative
Faculty and staff play an important role in supporting the Pathways: Incorporating Pathway activities into syllabi Developing activities Incorporating Pathways career skills into coursework Including Pathways goals - career and transfer advice and advising into your courses Knowing WHO to send students to with questions about the Pathways Attending events with classes to encourage participation and advance the importance of the Pathways

8 Components of the Pathways Initiative: Activities
Benefits: Students meet faculty and staff Students network with other students to create a cohort atmosphere Students network with alumni and learn from their experiences Students learn about major and program options Students explore career possibilities

9 Components of the Pathways Initiative: Activities
Each Pathway takes part in planning activities throughout the semester Activities planned by the Pathways Coordinators Faculty must see how the activity benefits student success Communication between coordinators and faculty must be frequent and delivered in multiple formats (individual outreach) Student attendance at events is better when encouraged by faculty Activities planned by faculty Faculty see the benefit of these activities, they planned them Student attendance increases when events are built around the existing curriculum

10 Components of the Pathways Initiative: Activities
Spring 2017 Events Semester Opening Kick-Off Events Immigration Speaker Series Film Festival Invited Lecture: Jane Elliott Institute for Social and Economic Justice Ethics Day

Common learning experiences that focus on student engagement and success Activities: require effort help students build substantive relationships with peers and faculty help students engage across differences provide meaningful feedback help students apply learning in new situations provide opportunity for reflection

12 High Impact Practices (HIPs)
HIPs embed in all sections of highly enrolled courses Faculty driven initiative - committees develop projects and plan for implementation HLTH 101 (Introduction to Health) HIP PSYC 101 (Introduction to Psychology) HIP

13 General Education Reform
Challenges: Competition among disciplines for enrollment Faculty lobby for their courses as general education program requirements No agreement on what the goals of general education are and how to achieve them Solutions: Invest faculty in decision making process by making them full partners from the start Faculty based committees to develop criteria for course selection for inclusion in the general education curriculum and to develop course proposals Empower faculty through shared governance as the ultimate decision makers

14 When Trying to Motivate Faculty Consider…
Value: make sure faculty understand how the assignment, activity benefits their students Autonomy: when possible, make activities faculty-driven Flexibility: plan activities, or support campus organizations planned activities that appeal to students/faculty in a wide range of disciplines Feedback: offer ample opportunity for feedback
