ACTION GROUP FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
(GED) CLEAN ENERGY, CLEAN WATER Maputo, April 2007
2
Introduction At leat 70% of all natural disasters occurring in the worls are attibuted to meteorological conditions; According to IPCC, continuing climate changes will have direct effects on increasing the natural disasters.
3
Situation in Mozambique
Mozambique is the country more affected by natural disasters in the Southern African Region; Major disasters are: cyclones, floodings and droughts.
4
Situation in Mozambique (continued)
The economy of the country depends essentially on agriculture, cattle raising and fishing; Therefore it is very vulnerable to climate changes and variability
5
Effects of Floodings
6
Effects of Droughts
7
Zones of Higher Higher Vulnerability to Droughts
8
Shortage of Surface Waters
Arid and semi arid areas of the country have serious shorteges of surface waters; Boreholes represent the most viable solution for water provision in such areas.
9
Availability of Boreholes in the Country
There are at least 8000 boreholes throughout the country; Handpumps have been used in such boreholes, but at higher pumping heads (about 45 m) they are not effective.
10
Importance of Photovoltaic and Wind Pumping Systems
Photovoltaic (PV) and wind pumping systems can represent a viable solution at higher pumping heads; Such systems have additional advantages in that they do not produce greenhouse gases.
11
A PV Pumping System in Catine, Gaza, Supported by IUCN
12
Still in implementation; Project to end in June 2007.
A PV Pumping System in Palmeira, Maputo, Supported by DANIDA Through MCT Still in implementation; Project to end in June 2007.
13
Major Objectives of the Interventions
Demonstrate the technologies; Learn how to introduce the technologies to local communities; Contribute to reduce the costs of the installation of systems by incorporating local materials and manpower; Prepare training activities for different stakeholders;
