1 Using the Local Tobacco Control Profiles (LTCP)
June 2017

2 Background Based on work originally undertaken by London Health Observatory and then London Knowledge and Intelligence Team. The Local Tobacco Control Profiles (LTCP) webtool is now the responsibility of Risk Factors Intelligence (within K&I) Available at Two parts: front end use to display data (called Fingertips), and a back end database which stores all the data (called PHOLIO) Many other webtools within PHE use exactly the same infrastructure (e.g. Public Health Outcomes Framework, Mental Health, Dementia and Neurology, NCMP, LAPE). Available at LTCP functionality

3 LTCP Data Tool Front Page
3 2 1 The main section (1) includes gives general info about the LTCP as well as links to page on gov.uk and details of functional updates. The LTCP is on a quarterly update schedule (February, May, August and November). The recent updates box (2) shows exactly what we have updated on which release. There is also a dedicated enquiries inbox To view the indicators click on the start button (3). LTCP functionality

4 LTCP Overview Tab 1 2 3 The row of tabs at the top (1) correspond to the different domains within the LTCP. By clicking on these you can change which domain you are exploring. The screenshot is of indicators within the “Key Indicators” domain (all of these indicators are also in other domains). The second row of tabs (2) correspond to the different ways in which indicators can be displayed. The screenshot is of the “Overview” tab which allows the user to look at a “tartan rug” of the data. The name of the indicators are down the side, and the local authorities or regions are along the top. The group of dropdowns below (3) this allows the user to change which Local Authorities they are looking at. They can look at Local Authorities grouped by region, PHE centre, deprivation decile and ONS cluster (only one at a time), and look at either Upper Tier Local Authorities or Lower Tier Local Authorities. It is also possible to look at the LAs “nearest neighbour”. It is also possible to export this view as an image for a report or presentation (as it is for all of the different views within the webtool). The benchmark can also be changed to region. LTCP functionality

5 LTCP Compare Indicators Tab
1 2 3 The “Compare Indicators” tab (1) allows users to form a scatter plot looking at the relationship between two indicators (through the drop down menus) (2). This slide shows the relationship between smoking prevalence in adults (from the APS) and the Index of multiple deprivation. As well as exporting the graph as an image for reports or presentations, it is also possible to highlight the LA that you have selected (in this case Derby) as well as put in a line of best fit and the R2 (which is a measure of the fit of the model) (3). LTCP functionality

6 LTCP maps tab 5 4 2 3 The map tab has a number of features available: When hovering over a local authority on the map, the name of the Local Authority and associated value is displayed and the value is highlighted on the graph (1). By clicking the local authority on the map, the value becomes selected in a table to the right of the map (2). Alternatively, hovering over the proportion graph brings up the name and the value of the local authority and also highlights the local authority on the map (3). Ability to zoom in and out on the map, and also to add different layers e.g. roads or satellite (4) Ability to change the colouring on the maps e.g. quartiles / quintiles / continuous scale (5) 1 LTCP functionality

7 LTCP Trends Tab 2 1 The Trends tab has a couple of neat features:
- The ability to see all indicators in that domain for a particular local authority (1) - The ability to see all trend data for all local authorities within a particular region for that indicator (2) More and more trend data is being added as the number of time points increases LTCP functionality

8 LTCP Compare Areas Tab 1 2 3 This is the “compare areas” tab
By default, the local authorities are ordered alphabetically, but this can be changed to either ascending or descending numerical value using the toggles underneath area, count or value. It is possible to look at all local authorities in England and ordering them accordingly (1) By clicking on the name of the indicator, this takes you to the definitions tab (which we will come on to) (2). By clicking on the name of the local authority, this takes you to the “area profiles” tab (see next slide) (3). 3 LTCP functionality

9 LTCP Area Profiles Tab The area profiles tab shows a spine chart of the indicators within a particular domain for a particular local authority. A spine chart has the England value centred at the red line, with the local authority value presented relative to this. The light grey box is the range of values for England, while the dark grey box is the inter-quartile range (middle 50% i.e. 25th percentile to the 75th percentile). This presentation of data allows a lot of information to be taken in with a quick glance. By clicking on the name of the indicator takes you back to the “compare areas” tab (see previous slide) LTCP functionality

10 LTCP Definitions Tab The definitions tab contains data metadata for all published indicators. This allows the user to establish the source and the methodology used to construct the indicator as well as any caveats It is important to look a this information when extracting data for any of the indicators, as methodology may have been changed since the last update and/or calculations may be different to data collated from other sources LTCP functionality

11 LTCP Inequalities Tab 1 3 2 4 The inequalities tab contains data presented for different equalities/inequalities characteristics The default view is inequalities at a national level, however we are increasingly trying to add inequalities data at a local level which can be viewed by selecting your area of choice (1) and then clicking the area name just above the chart (2). You are able to view the latest data values or trends (3) by selecting the relevant box above the chart To see which inequalities are available, see the list at the right hand side of the chart (4) and click on the dimension you wish to view. Work is on-going to add data to this section as and when it becomes available. LTCP functionality

12 LTCP England Tab This tab shows the value for indicators in the selected domain at England level. LTCP functionality

13 LTCP Download Tab 4 1 5 The download tab allows users to download the data either in the form of a PDF, or in an excel file of various iterations of the data for them to use how they wish. Data can be downloaded in Excel spreadsheets with 3 options: (1) All indicators for the local authorities in the area type selected (County & UA or District & UA) (2) Indicators within the selected domain (e.g. Key indicators) for the local authorities in the area type selected (County & UA or District & UA) (3) The selected indicator (4) only for the local authorities in the area type selected (County & UA or District & UA) PDF documents can also be downloaded for the chosen Local Authority (5) 2 3 LTCP functionality

14 LTCP FAQ section The FAQ section can be accessed using the ‘FAQs’ link in the top right of all sections of the profiles (as highlighted on this slide). Questions in the FAQ section are separated into three areas: Purpose and production of the profiles Indicators Localities and geography LTCP functionality

15 Forthcoming developments
Development of the further information and FAQ section of the tool (including links to guidance and evidence) Addition of inequalities data for indicators as they become available Fingertips team are working on functionality to enable users to create their own domain of indicators Any suggestions, queries or comments please get in contact with the LTCP team via: LTCP functionality
